The Ghost of George Bailey at the Galt Hospital

Today, the Galt Museum and Archives preserves the stories of southwestern Alberta. Within its former hospital walls, one local legend suggests that a figure from the past may still linger.

The building’s hospital history stretches back to the late 1880s, and its surviving 1910 wing connects visitors to that earlier chapter. In this recording, the Lethbridge Historical Society recounts the story of George Bailey, a 60-year-old farmer from Magrath who died following an elevator accident at the hospital in 1933.

Over the years, stories of strange encounters have become attached to his name: blue lights drifting along a hallway, dark shadows, and shuffling footsteps that stop outside an office door—with nobody there when staff look out.

Perhaps the most memorable tale concerns a maternity patient whose elevator unexpectedly took her to the basement. There, she reportedly saw a man she could see right through. When she told a nurse what had happened, the reply was remarkably calm: “Oh, that’s just George. He brings people downstairs when he gets lonely.”

The narration also offers ordinary explanations for some apparent hauntings, including late-night cleaners and sensor-activated lights. Listen to the history and the folklore, take in the old hospital building, and decide what you make of George’s enduring legend.

You may be glad you brought a friend.
