Signal
Douglas Senft
Signal is a smoking-good piece to commemorate the power of smoke, fire, and what that signals to different groups and cultures. It was proposed to the city as a response to an artist's call inviting artists to participate in a two-stage public artwork on the new Lethbridge City Fire Hall site. Douglas Senft envisioned "Signal" as a signal of smoke and flame from the coulees caught by a gust of wind. Twisting and turning, this piece encapsulated the ferocity and beauty of both fire and our notoriously strong winds. By obscuring the viewer's vision and leaving many open spaces with ways to peek through it, the sculpture exemplifies the duality of fire, in both its destructive and unconfined dance-like nature, both beautiful and tumultuous.
