How Can I Miss You if You Never Go Away?

How Can I Miss You if You Never Go Away?

Andy Davies, 2007

As part of an initiative to revitalize and beautify Galt Gardens by the Downtown Revitalization Steering Committee, this kinetic sculpture was commissioned to help beautify Galt Gardens. Three 22-foot flagpoles each house a large shape: a mask, a chair, and a whirl. The shapes are split into sections, allowing them to be moved with the wind that constantly whirls through our world. There is also a tiny three-foot flagpole accompanying the taller ones. This pole with a dog shape, the three sections of which can easily be rearranged by hand, was specifically created to engage and encourage interaction among the young and old alike. The title is also a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the nature of wind in Lethbridge. The responsive, kinetic nature of the sculpture enables both citizens and the wind to interact with the art and change how it looks, whenever the wind or the whim strikes.
